Mosaic Gathering Fall 2019 in Review

The Trinity Mosaic Gathering’s focus for Fall 2019, Reconciled to be Reconcilers: The Church as Witness, advanced the gospel ministry of reconciliation by equipping leaders, developing resources, and deepening local networks. Waukegan leaders served as mentors in the journey, helping to bridge our communities in mutually beneficial partnerships for the gospel.

We began with two foundational talks on our theme, Reconciled to be Reconcilers (2 Cor. 5:18).

From there, we reflected on the past 10 years of relationships between Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and the cities of North Chicago and Waukegan.

After this brief historical survey, we looked at a snapshot of what is unfolding today in Waukegan—a movement of congregations co-shepherding a community. In this new pastoral imagination, the language of co-pastoring resonated with many students. To others, it raised important concerns and questions. In all, we were encouraged to think about the nature of the Church and her witness to the world.

Next, we paused and turned together to the Scriptures. Katie Chambers guided us through a rich Bible study.

From co-pastoring a community and examining the Scriptures together, we asked the question, what does it look like to steward the pulpit faithfully for the sake of God’s ministries of reconciliation. Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates guided us.

After these theological and ecclesial reflections, we played a game together. In two weeks, Mosaic Gathering participants brainstormed and creatively thought through how to advance gospel ministries with intentionally limited resources. Staring with what we have, giving thanks, and offering our resources to God, many inspiring ideas came forth!

After theoretically brainstorming about community development, we learned from two leaders active in the ministry.

Next, we asked the important question, what does it look like to saturate a city with the gospel? James Chambers guided us.

To conclude the semester, we worshipped God together and prayed for one another and our communities. A combined team from Waukegan and Trinity led us in our time of worship and prayer.

During our last week, we celebrated what God is doing by enjoying a potluck, hearing testimonies, and also commissioning those graduating. To God be glory!
